Additional Property Attributes

This property was located n the town of "Old" Keller, Washington. "Old" Keller was demolished in 1939 and 1940 and the town was moved several miles north to its present day location ahead of the rising waters of Lake Roosevelt created by construction of the Grand Coulee Dam. The CTCR had conducted a study to determine whether recognized environmental conditions exist on the subject site as a consequence of historical smelter operations.

Former Use: This property was a part of the San Poil River floodplain. Historical sources indicate a small placer mining boom in the San Poil River basin opened up CIR to mining operations in 1898. R.L. Boyle and his Keller and Indiana Consolidated Smelting Company (KICS) constructed the smelter to process copper ore from the nearby Manila Mine. During construction of the smelter, a dam was built across the San Poil river about a mile and a half of "Old" Keller to divert water into a flume to generate electricity for smelting operations. A small sampling mill was also constructed adjacent to the smelter. Locally mined ore and coke use for fuel were transported to the subject property and was stored in large wooden bins which were stockpiled while smelter was under construction in anticipation of future operations. It was estimated that between 1,000 tons of ore was stored in the bins. Mr. Boyle died shortly after the smelter was constructed. The smelter remained idle for several years because KICS lacked sufficient funds for smelter operations following Mr. Boyle's death, which was further complication by a drop in mineral prices. The smelter never operated from the time of construction in 1906 through demolition in 1939-1940.
