Additional Property Attributes

The subject property consists of one 0.43-acre parcel of land developed with a 4,450-square-foot commercial building and is currently unoccupied. The subject property was historically developed with a church and a dwelling from at least 1884 through the early 1960s. The church and residence were razed in the early 1960s and the current site building was constructed in the mid-1960s and was used by several banks until it became vacant in approximately 2010. No RECs were observed during the most recent Phase I ESA.

Former Use: According Sanborn fire insurance maps the subject property was developed with a church and a residential dwelling from as early as the 1880s and continued to be occupied by a church and a residence used as a parsonage until the early 1960s. Sanborn maps identified the following historic addresses for the property; 559 and 561 E. Chicago Road in the early 1900s, and 205 and 207 E. Chicago Road from the 1930s to the present. City directories identify several Baptist church names and the associated church pastor listed as site occupants of the property from 1907 through 1961. According to records on file with the City of Sturgis Department of Public Works the church and residence were razed around 1963. The current site building was constructed in the mid-1960s and was occupied by several banks until the building became unoccupied around 2010. Site occupants listed in city directories from 1964 through 2009 include First National Bank and Trust, Ameritrust National Bank, Society Bank Michigan Trust, and Key Bank. Previous owners of the site identified in assessor records available from the city include First National Bank and Trust Co. when the site was first developed as a bank in the mid-1960s followed by Key Bank National Association, who then sold the property to the current owner of the site, Erik Johnson in 2015.
