Additional Property Attributes

The property operated as a public elementary school from the 1940s until 2004, when it closed due to school district consolidation. Although ownership was transferred to the City of McNeil in 2015, the property has remained vacant since 2004, resulting in severe deterioration of the abandoned buildings.

The property contains six structures. The northernmost structure, a concrete block building with a metal roof, appears to be newer than the other structures. This building is currently used by the City of McNeil as a community center. The other five structures are brick buildings connected by a series of covered walkways. Four of the buildings were former classrooms and one was the former school gymnasium.

The contaminant of concern for the property is asbestos which is present in building materials. Any reuse of the property would likely require the brick school buildings to be demolished. Following assessment and cleanup planning, a reuse will be determined.
