Additional Property Attributes

The property consist of an old surface strip mine that was abandoned in the 1970s leaving mine-scarred land near several residences and north of the Victoria National Golf Course. The property contains large mounds of spoil (waste rock) and stripper pits caused from the historic mining operations. The assessments used as part of this cooperative agreement were to evaluate the potential bat habitat, natural dam features, and contamination from post mining operations. The assessments have leveraged approximately 50 million dollars in funding to conduct planning and site preparation for a mixed-use development that will include residential structures combined with commercial retail businesses. The new development will help remedy the ill-effects of the mine-scarred land features while retaining much of the beautiful landscape features around the on-site freshwater bodies.

Former Use: The property consists of an irregular shaped lot totaling approximately 390 acres. The property is primarily undeveloped land and wooded areas. Large mounds of mine spoil (soil and bedrock tailings) and lakes (stripper pits) generated from old coal surface mines are located across the property. Steep slopes from these mounds are common. Several trails traverse the central and south portions of the property. Coal mining operations appeared to occur on the property from circa 1960s to 1970s. The current owners are Roslin Partners II, LLC and Victoria Land Holdings, LLC. Notable past ownership includes Sentry Royalty Company and Peabody Coal Company.
