Additional Property Attributes

The Somersville Mill textile plant was in operation for over one hundred years during the 19th and 20th centuries. When the mill closed in the 1970s, the building was left abandoned and became an eyesore that was a frequent topic of frustration among residents. The problem was exacerbated in 2012 when a fire burned the building to the ground, and all that remained were piles of steel and brick. As a result of the fire, asbestos that was used in the buildings roofing material was scattered around the site among the piles of debris. The Town secured a $1.8 million grant from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development for demolition of the remaining structure and decontamination of the site. A STEAP grant of $440,000 was also awarded for remediation and demolition. Phase I of the cleanup process was started in August of 2017 and finished three months later in November. The 5.56-acre site has been leveled and is fenced. The site is divided in half by the Scantic River with about three acres of developable land on the north side and a smaller portion of land ideal for outdoor recreation on the south side. The Town of Somers needs additional funds to complete a second phase of the remediation project. Phase II is the construction of retaining walls that allow for proper support of the soil at the edges of the river on the north and south sides of the site. The retaining walls will prevent contaminated soil from the Somersville Mill site to migrate into the Scantic River. Without the walls, contaminated soil could collapse into the river and destabilize the ground.
