Additional Property Attributes

This project involved redevelopment of an abandoned elementary neighborhood school to be used as a multi-functional community outreach center for residents of the historically disadvantaged Grant Beach neighborhood who are struggling with poverty. The Brownfields Revolving Loan fund was used for lead-based paint and asbestos remediation. What is now The Fairbanks, serves as an outreach center where residents can access resources such as childcare, financial educational classes, transportation, housing, mental health, and food assistance among many other services. The site is now a bustling neighborhood hub and has fostered reinvestment in the surrounding houses and has been a catalyst for stable change in the neighborhood. An emerging urban food hub with multiple greenhouses, market gardens, pack sheds, and processing facilities in collaboration with the Springfield Community Gardens has grown on site providing food to impoverished residents in a documented food desert.
