Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The subject property consists of a 0.8-acre parcel of unimproved land. Based upon review of historical aerial photographs, city directories and interview remarks, the subject property has been not been developed for any obvious use within its history. The property was wooded land from 1938 to 1966 and there was no obvious access to the property due to the absence of nearby roads. In 1966, the adjoining Alabama Highway 59 was present and the western portion of the property now appeared to be cleared. In 1981 and 1986 the clearing appeared to expand and its reflective appearance indicates the exposure of sandy soils. From 1992 to 2015, the cleared area appeared to be covered with grass as it was at the time of the site visit. The eastern portion of the site remained wooded throughout its history. A low dirt mound or berm is located within the tree line and borders the western clearing. The mound is covered with trees and other vegetation that has no evidence of stress. Instead the grass vegetation clearing appears to be somewhat stressed possibly due to the absence of topsoil that was scraped from the area in the 1960s. The timing of the clearing coinciding with the building of Highway 59 between 1966 and 1976 and the absence of any other apparent property use indicates the clearing had something to do with the road construction. The evidence indicates the topsoil on the western portion of the site was scrapped and pushed to the east to create the existing mound. This may have been performed either to grade the shoulder of the highway or to access the underlying gravelly sand as a limited source of road fill material. No obvious visible evidence of contamination with either petroleum products or hazardous materials was noted during the site visit.
