Additional Property Attributes

Riverfront Park has a rich and varied history. The Park is centered on Spokane Falls a spectacular natural feature that for thousands of years served as a gathering place and prime fishing area for Native Americans. Power generated by the Falls made it a focus for industrial development beginning with the construction in 1871 of the first saw mill along the south bank. In subsequent decades, the area also became a hub for the rail industry with rail yards covering Havermale Island (the present site of the Park) which was also the location of the Great Northern Railroad Depot completed in 1902. Over subsequent decades, the area became increasingly characterized by blight, pollution, and abandonment. Concerns over the areas condition led to it being identified as a focus for urban renewal in a Master Plan adopted for the area in 1961. Former Use: Historically, in the early 1900's Area C contained a saw mill (Phoenix Saw Mill Lumberyard) and rail road easements for Union Pacific and the Great Northern Railroad. By 1952 the lumber yard was no longer shown on Sanborn Maps for Area C. Parcels associated with Area C were acquired by the City in 1973 and 1974 in preparation for Expo 74'. The funds requested through this grant have helped offset the disposal costs for impacted soil and facility revitalization of RFP. Construction activities in 2020 for the North Bank generally included removal of petroleum contaminated soil, lead contaminated soils, removal of the former maintenance building and construction of a parking lot, new maintenance building and new playground with various features. One of the top three new attractions requested by the public is a destination playground. The theme of Riverfront's new playground is the Ice Age Floods which are responsible for sculpting the unique geology of our region. Because of the dynamic nature of the Ice Age Floods and the rich imagery of its components, its story will be transformed into an exciting play environment that also offers rich, multi-dimensional learning opportunities.
