Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Note: cleanup funding completed through Nevada Brownfields Program Revolving Loan Fund. The Babbitt Housing Area was constructed during WWII to provide housing for civilian workers. A total of 580 duplexes and 12 community buildings were constructed. The buildings were demolished starting in 1953 and ending in 1994. The only structure not demolished was the bowling alley, which remained in use until 2004. Mineral County purchased the entire 400 acre site from the US Army for $1 in 1998. County land use planning efforts revived interest in potential reuse of the Babbitt Housing Area. In order to ready the area for redevelopment, the County needed to assess the empty parcels and demolish the bowling alley. The Phase II revealed asbestos containing building materials and DDE (breakdown product of the pesticide DDT) in the surface debris and soil. During the cleanup, all asbestos containing building materials were abated through removal. Mineral County then demolished the building.
