Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Site was originally a portion of the Lyman Child homestead in 1890. The first identified development of the Site was sometime between 1914 and 1922 and consisted of a small automotive garage. An additional building, the oldest portion of the existing Site building, was developed next to the automotive garage as a Mobil gas station in 1929 by Leon Perkins. An additional fuel dispenser was installed along Pleasant Street in front of the Mobil station. In 1933, the Mobil was sold and became Benson Chevrolet, an automobile dealership. The Site was purchased by Valley Motor Sales in 1947. Between 1945 and 1962 a wooden shed with a mixed cement and dirt floor was constructed on the north side of the Site and the small automotive garage was replaced with a larger filling station building. The wooden shed was used by Valley Motor Sales as an auto body shop. The filling station building was removed prior to 1973. A small restaurant was located at the southeast corner of the Site in the 1940s, converted to residential use by the 1960s, and was removed in the late 1960s or 1970s. The auto body shop building was removed in 2016.

Nolato GW (formerly known as GW Plastics), one of the largest employers in the region, is expanding their existing operations in Bethel to the Valley Motors site, which sits adjacent to their own property. TRORC assisted with a couple assessment activities at this site under a previous Cooperative Agreement with USEPA (00A00110). Under this Cooperative Agreement (00A00420), TRORC paid the application fee for the site's enrollment in the state's BRELLA program. The site was remediated in early 2022 with assistance from a USEPA Cleanup Grant, and is now awaiting redevelopment by Nolato GW.
