Additional Property Attributes

The subject property was developed with Union Public School and a small blacksmith shop as early as 1885. By the early 1900s two single-family residences were also present on the southwest portion of the property. The Union Public School building was replaced by the original portion of the present school building in 1921. Additions to the building were constructed in 1952, 1979, and 1989 in support of expanding school operation which continued until 2011. It is also known as the East China Education Center. A Brownfield Plan for the Camp.Us Inn Redevelopment project is going through the approval process. Proposed project involves creation of workforce housing to support nearby redevelopment leveraging up to 350 jobs from the other developments. Redevelopment metrics will be added at the appropriate time. Private investment is estimated at $3,750,000.

Former Use: The earliest historical use information regarding the property was derived from the 1895 Sanborn map, which shows a two-story school building known as Union School along with another one-story school building and a very small blacksmith shop on the subject property. Building plans show the original portion of the current building was built in 1921. An addition was constructed in 1952 on the north end of the building followed by another addition in 1974. Portions of the building have been used by a community cable TV station, daycare, community church, and community recreation since the school closed in 2011.
