Additional Property Attributes

Horlick Haban, also known as the former Horlick Malted Milk Factory, and now known as Belle City Square, encompasses approximately 14 acres total in the City of Racine. These historically designated properties were constructed in the late 1800s/early 1900s and originally used by William Horlick and his brother for the production of nutritional supplements for infants, "malted milk". Joseph Haban, mechanical engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur, purchased a portion of the facility in 1974 for use of the production of the corn husker sheller, and various garden tractor blades and equipment. Since then, the properties have had a variety of industrial and commercial uses until it was purchased by J. Jeffers and Co. for a mixed-use commercial and residential development. The age of the buildings and the long term use as an industrial property posed several environmental hurdles that were addressed with EPAs BCRLF funding such as lead based paint, asbestos containing materials, and contaminated soil. Now, the first phase of the development, Horlick Haban - South, encompasses nearly 5 acres of residential development.
