Additional Property Attributes

Former shrine and missionary school converted into a regional center for the arts.

Former Use: The Site is one 8.9-acre parcel (Map 409, Lot 19) located south of the Columbia-Colebrook town line and west of US Route 3. Current Site structures include the former Parsons Farmhouse (aka, the residence), a workshop, large chapel/barn complex, a small lean-to garage/shed, and an amphitheater. Other pertinent Site features include a horseshoe-shaped driveway, parking lot, lawn areas, paths, and platforms where statues once stood. The Site is bounded by woods to the north, farmland to the northwest, residencies to the south-southwest, a hotel to the northeast, and U.S. Route 3 and vacant former shrine to the southeast-east. The Site was first developed (circa 1843) as farmland with a family homestead, including several barns and a farmhouse. The Site was then operated as one of the areas largest and most prosperous farms from 1843 to 1895. An inn, referred to as Parsons Farm or Hampshire Inn, was built at the Site around 1897. Between 1897 and 1917, the Site operated as a tourist resort until 1922 when it was sold to the Franco-American Province of the Oblates (more recently known as the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate Inc. of New Hampshire). Between 1922 and 1969, the Site was operated as a juniorate, novitiate, and shrine for the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. During this time, the site-occupants established a small farm and cleared wooded areas. In 1963 to 1964, the site-occupants constructed the concrete block workshop/garage. After 1969, the Site operated solely as the Shrine of Our Lady Grace. By 2012, there were no longer pilgrimage visits, and the Shrine closed in 2014. The Site was purchased by the GNWCA in 2018. Currently, the residence is used as office space and lodging for visiting actors and actresses, the chapel/barn complex is used as a theater, and the User intends to use the workshop/garage to construct theater sets.
