The property building was historically used as a school gymnasium, a library, a school cafeteria, and by the fire department for storage. The property consists of an approximate 19,952 square foot building. Based on prior reports, asbestos containing materials, lead-based paint, and mold were identified in the property building. The City plans to transform the building into a future community center. The community is seeking a $500,000 Historic Preservation Grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) for the proposed renovation work. The City was awarded a $20,000 feasibility study planning grant funded by the Indiana OCRA. The current owner was listed as the City of Cannelton with the Cannelton School Corporation as the lessee.
