Additional Property Attributes

The property is known as the Old Rome Courthouse. With its construction in 1818, the building is one of the oldest standing courthouses in Indiana. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. The building was utilized as a courthouse, a church, and/or schools until 1966. The building has most recently been used as a community center. Based on prior investigations, asbestos, lead-based paint, and mold were identified in the building materials. The Rome Community Center, Inc. (current owner) and Perry Central School Corporation of Perry County were listed as the most recent owners of the property. The Rome Community Center, Inc. was awarded a $20,000 historic preservation grant to assist with needed renovation/repair work on the building. Future use of the property is expected to continue as a community center.
