Additional Property Attributes

Former Coos County Courthouse

Former Use: The Site is two adjoining parcels, totaling 0.34-acres, situated along the west bank of the Androscoggin River. The former Courthouse building occupies 220 Main Street, and 234 Main Street is currently vacant. The Courthouse has a granite block foundation with a brick exterior, asphalt roofing, and plaster and drywall interior walls. The Courthouse is currently only heated in the basement by electric baseboards. Historically, the Site building was heated with coal and then a fuel oil fired boiler with a supplemental electric forced air system. The remains of a former building foundation are present on the 234 Main Street portion of the Site. The Site is accessed by vehicular traffic from Main Street. The Site was residentially developed by 1892. By 1895, a carriage shop and storehouses for hay and grain occupied the Site. By 1901, saloons occupied 220 Main Street, and a steam laundry business operated at 234 Main Street. By 1905, the saloon buildings were demolished and replaced with a blacksmith shop. By 1909, the County Courthouse replaced the blacksmith shop and remains today. Between approximately 1909 and 1950, a furniture business operated at 234 Main Street, and between approximately 1950 and 2013, 234 Main Street was used for residential housing. In 2013, the City acquired 234 Main Street and demolished the Site buildings.
