Additional Property Attributes

Site known as "cyanide corner" and anecdotally reported to have buried drums or other containers of cyanide in the subsurface.

Former Use: The Site consists of two small property lots (Map J Lots 103 and 104-2) formerly associated with a larger tract, adjacent to the confluence of Stony Brook and the Souhegan River. One of the property lots (Map J Lot 103) appears to be within the Stony Brook channel. The second property lot exists along the western edge of Stony brook adjacent to the the Burns Hill Road bridge abutment. The operational history at Site includes manufacturing activity at least as early as 1872, when a boilerhouse chimney was erected for the Whitings Box Company. By 1876, a wooden two and a half story mill building was constructed over the Lot 104-2 property , with a larger operations building extending along the adjacent Lot 104-1 property. Whitings & Sons sold the property to the Edward J. Abbott Memorial Trust, Inc. in 1961. In 1991, the adjacent Lot 104-1 was subdivided and sold to the Wilton Falls Association. A covenant and restriction was also placed upon Lot 104-2 in that the property could not be used or improved in any manner and be deemed a non-building lot. The Site is currently vacant with concrete surfaced walking paths and a railing along the retaining wall to Stony Brook. The abutting property to the west was sold to the Town of Wilton in 2000 and is currently the Wilton Police Department building with associated parking lot.
