Additional Property Attributes

The 0.28-acre Site is improved with an approximately 1,000-square foot single-story Site building, which was formerly used as the Amesbury Visitor's Center. The Site is identified as Tax Map 101, Lot 1. The Site building is constructed of concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls with an asphalt roof. The building is used by the City to set up holiday-themed displays. The Site building was constructed circa 1930 according to the City of Amesbury Tax Card. Smith Fuel Company (owned by Harvey Smith) owned and operated the Site reportedly as a gas station from 1938 to 1966, identified as Smith's Chain Bridge Filling Station No. 3 on a 1940 postcard. Four fuel dispensers on two pump islands were formerly located in the southern portion of the Site. Records research indicates no USTs are registered for the Site.

A concrete pad located southeast of the Site building is presumed to protect an out-of-service underground storage tank (UST) system. The southern portion of the Site is a compacted gravel parking area. The northern portion of the Site is vegetated and was used as a construction staging area during construction of the adjacent Whittier Bridge Replacement Project. Vehicle access to the Site is limited to one entrance/exit on Main Street.
