Additional Property Attributes

The Site comprises two parcels with street addresses of 7 and 15 Shedd Street. The 7 Shedd Street parcel (Lot 60) is 1.24 -acres. The 15 Shedd Street parcel (Lot 61) adjoins the east side of Lot 61 and is 0.97 acres. The Site includes two sheds and two garages. The Lot 61 garage is constructed on a concrete slab and the Lot 60 garage has only a slab in the center of the garage with earthen floors throughout the remainder of the structure. The sheds have no foundation. Former loading platforms or retaining walls were observed in the northern portion of Lot 60 adjacent to a former railroad line. The remainder of the Site is generally surfaced with a gravel or deteriorated asphalt parking lot, and earthen surfaces in the wooded areas along the Site perimeter. Earliest references suggested the Site was owned by the Northern Railroad in 1889. By 1893, the Site was utilized for lumber storage possibly associated with a saw and shingle mill located northwest of the Site. At that time, the Boston and Maine Railroad operated a line along the northern border of the Site. In 1904, a nearby property to the north was occupied by the American Woolen Co. Baltic Mills Yarn Mill with activities that may have included the Site. In 1912, the Site was occupied for lumber storage by Wells & Flanders. By 1923, Wells & Flanders continued operation at the Site with the construction of a box shop consisting of a 1-story building and is shown to have utilized shavings as fuel for heat, used electricity for lighting, and received municipal water service. Ownership records of Lot 61 are unclear although municipal records indicate the Lot 61 Site garage was constructed in 1930 and by 1948 is shown as the Town Garage. At that time the remainder of the Site (Lot 60) is occupied by the Enfield Box Co. Inc. with an expanded box shop, a railroad spur with a 1-story storage structure, and a 2-story sawdust collection structure west of the box shop. Ownership of Lot 60 transferred from the Northern Railroad to Fairfax Co. Inc. (Fairfax) in 1956. The Lot 60 garage was reportedly constructed in the 1960s. The former Enfield Box Co. Inc. buildings were removed at some point between 1977 and 1987 during which time the Town of Enfield assumed ownership of the Site in 1980 for public works use.
