Additional Property Attributes

Standard and other historical sources were able to document that the eastern portion was developed in 1917 with construction of the St. Francis Home for Boys in the central portion and a railroad siding associated with coal delivery in the central and southern portions. An eastern addition (gymnasium and locker rooms) was constructed between 1926 and 1941. The railroad siding was removed by at least 1949. Between 1956 and 1961, a central addition (natatorium) and a southwestern addition (garage) were constructed and baseball diamonds and a parking lot were constructed in the southern portion. A western addition (dormitory) was constructed between 1961 and 1966 when an additional garage was constructed southwest of the building. Paved parking areas were present west and northwest of the building by at least 1981. A shipping container was brought onto the southern portion of the subject property between 2002 and 2005 associated with recreational activities. The St. Francis Home for Boys occupied the eastern portion of the subject property from 1917 until the 1990s and by the Paul Robeson School from at least 1998 until demolition in 2012. The southern portion historically consisted of vacant land and has been utilized for recreational activities since at least 1961. Standard and other historical sources were able to document that the western portion was developed between at least 1921 and 1923 with several residential dwellings, flats, and associated garages. Additional dwellings and garages were constructed throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The southern dwellings and garages were demolished by 1968, when the current school building and paved parking area were constructed. The remaining dwellings and garages were demolished between the 1970s and 2019 and the northern portion has consisted of vacant land since that time.
