Additional Property Attributes

Historical review indicates that the eastern parcel of the Site has been improved with a former powerhouse, which was constructed circa 1886. The western parcel has been improved with a garage on the west Site boundary constructed between 1941 and 1950, a small automobile garage to the east of the above-mentioned garage constructed between 1941 and 1950, a garage located to the west of the south side of the powerhouse building constructed between 1936 and 1941, and a garage in poor condition located to the west of the north side of the powerhouse building constructed between 1915 and 1936. At least two (2) subsurface concrete steam tunnel exits were observed in the powerhouse building basement, and were formerly connected to other buildings on the Central State Hospital campus. The Site was first developed in mid-1800s for the operation of an insane asylum. The asylum operated through 1994 and the City of Indianapolis has utilized the Site for police barns and pasture since the closing of Central State Hospital. The powerhouse was reportedly shut down in 1988 and has not been repurposed or reused for any operations since that time. The potential purchaser of the property would like to redevelop the Site for mixed use purposes, including: multi-residential housing, event space, retail, and restaurants.
