Additional Property Attributes

The City took title to the 6-story, former Wahkonsa Annex building in July 2016, through an involuntary, abandonment proceeding taking in Iowa District Court. Former Use: The 6-story former hotel was built in 1917-1919, and functioned as a hotel until 1972; after that it had miscellaneous business and non-profit uses, but had sat empty and abandoned for more than 8 years under the ownership of an out-of-state owner that was unresponsive for payment of taxes and property maintenance. The City of Fort Dodge took title as an 'involuntary taking' through a legal, abandonment clause in Iowa Code, requiring the Iowa District Court to assign title to the City in 2016.

In 2021/2022 the City began cleanup efforts of asbestos and lead-based paint of the Wahkonsa Annex Building. Cleanup was completed on April 6, 2022 and the site is ready for redevelopment. The site will be marketed for redevelopment in conjunction with the Warden Plaza.
