Additional Property Attributes

Past use of the property was the original campus of the Oklahoma Presbyterian College beginning in 1892. Initially, Halsell hall was built as a two-story frame school building constructed on a small tract of land bought from Dixon Durant, a Choctaw man. Halsell Hall was later expanded in 1894 into Calvin Institute. The Calvin Institute closed again for expansion and later reopened as the Durant Presbyterian College in 1896. The college then expanded into the Oklahoma Presbyterian College for Girls in 1910. The original building was the Northern building, which is a red brick building with white windows, a flat white roof, and white brick details. The Southern building was added with the 1910 campus and was built in the same as the Northern building. The third building, which is set back from the Northern and Southern buildings, was later added in the early 2000s and was constructed to mirror both older buildings. The Northern building originally had a 4th floor, but it was damaged in a fire in 1941. Reconstruction occurred, but the 4th floor was not rebuilt. In 1975, the building was purchased by the Red River Valley Historical Society. The same year, Chief Clark David Gardner moved Choctaw Nation's administrative offices into the building. A nomination for the National Register of Historic Places was approved for listing in 1976. During the 1990s gradually Choctaw Nation offices started filling the buildings and adding onto the original campus. A Phase I environmental site assessment and a lead-based paint inspection were completed on the campus. Lead-based paint was only identified in the Northern building in a very limited area. All lead-based paint identified in the Northern building is in good condition and does not require removal or encapsulation at this time. However, monitoring of the areas identified is ongoing. Fire-safe doors were also identified and are in good condition. Current uses of the site are to house the Chahta Foundation in the Northern building and future uses are to house small business development services in the Southern building.
