Additional Property Attributes

The current Cottrill's Opera House building was built in 1901-02 in downtown Thomas. It served as a vaudeville theater, saloon, gathering place, and later a movie theater and community center before it fell into dire disrepair over the years. The theater changed hands in the middle of 20th century a few times and finally closed in 1977. In 1981, Alpine Heritage Preservation, the current nonprofit organization owners took over ownership. They have attempted redevelopment efforts over the years with little success except keeping the building envelope secured. The downstairs have been redeveloped and serve as office/gallery space currently. The upstairs theater space is severly diapidated with past damage. There is a renewed effort to restore the theater utilizing historic tax credits and other financing. Restoring this historic theater will create a sorely needed performing arts center and cultural hub in Tucker County, West Virginia. It will also accelerate the arts-driven economic resurgence already well underway in the Potomac Highlands region. Lead paint and asbestos assessments are needed to inform any cleanup and budget line items. Also, because of the nature of the town with mine scarred land, a Phase I ESA will also be conducted to rule out or identify any potential contaminants.
