Additional Property Attributes

Historical operations at the Site included a variety of machine shops and manufacturers, metal fabricators, and Liberty Electric Co. The site appears to have been most recently occupied by Indus Wheel Company (name changed to Carlisle Tire & Rubber in 1990). Commercial operations ceased at the Site in 1991, and the buildings were slated for demolition in 1993. The Site has apparently remained vacant since 1993 and buildings were subsequently razed sometime between late 1993 and 1995 (exact date unknown). Available documentation in the Virtual File Cabinet (VFC), MapIndy and a City Directory search indicates Standard Machine and Electric Co. operated on the north portion of the Site property from at least 1898 to 1917. Marschke Manufacturing operated on the same location from at least 1926 to 1932, and Vonnegut Molder Corp. was in operation in the same building from at least 1937 to 1952. A coal company and South Side Waste Material Co. appears to have operated on the northeast corner of the site briefly around the late 1930's. Near the center of the site, Pittsburg Plate Glass Co. was in operation from at least 1926 to 1932, and Liberty Electric Co. was in operation at the same location from at least 1937 to 1963. Coal yards by various names were present on the south end of the property from at least 1915 to 1952. By 1956, Indus Corp. had taken over at least the northern portion of the Site and expanded to the entire site by 1968. Indus Wheel Company (metal fabrication) was still in business by the 1980's, and the name was changed to Carlisle Tire & Rubber in 1990. Carlisle Tire & Rubber was listed as a large quantity generator of hazardous waste. The limited information available in the VFC from the late 1980's and early 1990's lists hazardous waste codes F003, F005 and U220. Inspection reports and waste approvals also indicate the Site generated paint wastes and asbestos brake lining wastes.
