Additional Property Attributes

The oldest available historical documentation is a 1938 aerial photograph that shows the subject property as cleared with a portion of the subject property being used for agricultural purposes. The 1949 through 1981 aerial photographs show a long linear building on the southern portion of the property that extends from the west side of the subject property to the east side of the subject property slightly extending into the east adjoining property. The best representation of this building is shown on the 1970 topographic map which shows the building and a railroad spur line (also seen in the 1949 to 1981 aerial photographs at the north side of the building curving to the northwest where it connects with the main railroad tracks on the west side of State Market Road). Historical documentation identifies this building as the State Farmers Market and the property was owned by the State of Florida. City directories list businesses in the State Farmers Market as wholesale produce companies, farm equipment companies, trucking companies, and refrigeration companies. Based on the predominant agricultural use of the surrounding area, the State Farmer's Market served as a business hub that received agricultural products from surrounding farms and shipped wholesale produce via railroad cars or trucks. The specific date the State Farmers Market stopped operation is unknown, but is assumed to be the early to mid-1980s as the site building and railroad tracks are not shown in the 1996 aerial photograph. The property was conveyed to the City of Pahokee in 1989.Between 1996 and 1999, a sanitary sewer lift station was constructed at the southwest side of the site adjacent to the Palm Beach County Fleet Management Facility. In 1999, a communications/cell phone tower enclosure was constructed at the northeast corner of the site. Powering the tower are two propane aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) and two emergency generators with belly diesel tanks. Between the early 2000s and approximately 2015, the property was vacant. In 2015, a company named Biomass Recycling applied for a solid waste permit to operate as a source-separated organics processing facilities. This company operated at the site from 2015 to 2016 when its permit was suspended.
