Additional Property Attributes

During a recent sewer replacement project conducted by the Springfield Sewer and Water Authority (an independent entity from the City), contamination was identified in the paper road known as Burghardt Street. The City acquired many of the parcels adjacent to this paper street through tax title taking and is designating this area for conservation space. In addition, the City is considering plans for activating this area as a passive recreational location and bird watching destination, due to the abundant wildlife that is located in the area. The City of Springfield does not have a lot of designated greenspace and/or properties that allow such passive recreational use.

The City was granted approval by EPA to use it's Hazardous Substances Grant to conduct a limited Phase II ESA and historical research into the past uses / activities at these properties in order to potentially identify the source of contamination, and to facilitate identification of cleanup and/or reuse options that are consistent with the City's mission to enhance recreational opportunities and land conservation for the benefit of the general public. The Phase II ESA will be conducted in accordance with ASTM standards and in order to comply with MCP requirements for a Phase I Initial Site Investigation (ISI).
