Additional Property Attributes

This former community school building had been closed in the early 1980s, and subsequent, private owners neglected the building and its maintenance, resulting in partial building collapse. As an attractive nuisance, the City sought to take title to the property to demolish the building; however, the collapsed structure would have to be handled and disposed of as ACM debris, thus exacerbating demolish cost totals. This small City (pop. 161) sought assistance from Iowa DNR with a cost-share toward ACM debris removal to make the demolition feasible. Iowa DNR assisted with a pre-acquisition environmental all appropriate inquiry, and the City was able to receive title through donation. Upon receipt of title the ACM debris was properly removed and disposed of. The City is now planning to redevelop the property for new housing or as a natural habitat restoration; however, as a great deal of funds were expended by the City for the demolition, they will need to save funds over a number of fiscal years ahead of any new investment toward these end use options.
