Additional Property Attributes

The two-story building was constructed circa 1920, and operated initially as a pharmacy, with living quarters on the 2nd floor; Putnam Pharmacy in the 1950s being the most known namesake as a pharmacy at this It later was converted to a music store, and by 1996 was known as "Crazy Horse Guitars" for sale of instruments and music lesson services. The property sat vacant by 2015, and with an initiative by the City of Des Moines and the Neighborhood Development Corporation (NDC) to invest in the redevelopment of this support commercial district near Drake University, NDC sought to acquire the building, renovate it, and move NDC's offices to the second floor, and then lease the bottom floor to a retail tenant, likely a restaurant, as an amenity for shoppers and customers in this area. As the costs to renovate the structure would be more than twice the likely assessed, improved value of the property, assistance was sought from the Iowa DNR 128(a) program to assist with envrionmental due diligence and hazardous material inspections and abatement activities. Upon renovation of the building, NDC moved its offices to the 2nd floor, and "Lucky Horse Bar & Restaurant" opened on the first floor in the fall of 2020. Both of these uses revitalized not only the building, but have assisted in the transformation of this neighborhood, with great success for all partners in its redevelopment planning and investment.
