KCRD is applying for a cleanup grant to abate asbestos at a house that KCRD purchased in December 2020. This large, dilapidated, uninhabitable house is located at 402 Main Street in the heart of our small community. KCRD hired American Veteran Environmental in early 2021 to conduct an environmental assessment of this property. Their report is attached to this grant (402 Main St, pre demoRevised.pdf). Friable asbestos was found in both the interior and exterior of this home. KCRD received a bid from Homeland Environmental to perform the abatement at this house. KCRD would like to hire Homeland Environmental to perform this abatement. When the abatement is completed, KCRD will hire American Veteran Environmental to return to the site and make sure all asbestos was successfully abated. If the site is clear, KCRD will apply for a demo permit with CDPHE. After we receive this demo permit a local contractor, Loren Mitchek, will perform the demolition of this house. KCRD then plans to build an affordable housing unit on this site. Funding for that new house will come from a $500,000 HUD Grant (that KCRD received in partnership with the Town of Kit Carson) in April 2021.
