Additional Property Attributes

The Northern Portion of the subject property was developed in at least 1934 with a dwelling, converted for retail use, in the southern portion (12602 Mark Twain Street). A commercial building was constructed in the eastern portion (14300-14306 Fullerton Avenue) with additional commercial building or storefront (14310 Fullerton Avenue) and a gasoline dispensing station (14314 Fullerton Avenue) constructed in the southern portion by 1935. An additional commercial building or storefront was constructed in the southern portion (14330 Fullerton Avenue) by 1940. The gasoline dispensing station operated until at least 1953. An addition was completed on the northern portion of the eastern commercial building during the 1980s. The former commercial buildings or storefronts were demolished during the 1990s and the former eastern commercial building was demolished between 2012 and 2016.

The eastern commercial building and eastern portion of the property were occupied by a lumber yard, sand and gravel company, and builder's supply warehouse between at least 1937 and the 1960s, a drum storage operation between at least the 1960s and 1970s, and various steel and manufacturing companies between the 1980s and 2000s. The eastern portion was utilized for exterior storage or associated with the adjoining automotive salvage yard between at least 2009 and 2016. The additional commercial buildings or storefronts along the southern portion were historically occupied by restaurants, grocers, retail storefronts, sign making activities, or repair garage between the 1930s and 1990s. The remainder of the Northern Portion has generally been residential or vacant land since at least the 1930s. The Eastern Portion was developed during at least the 1920s with the current building in the southern portion (14250 Plymouth Road). Additions were completed on the current building and additional warehouse (12300 Mark Twain Street) and outbuildings were constructed throughout the central portion by the 1930s. Various additions were completed on the central warehouse during the 1950s and an additional warehouse was constructed in the northern portion by 1972. The current building and former central building were occupied by factory operations associated with the Kelvinator Corporation, manufacturer of home refrigerators, at the time of construction. The company merged with Nash Motors and became Nash-Kelvinator during the late 1930s and produced refrigerators and oil burners. The company later became American Motors Corporation during the 1950s, when merged with Hudson Motors. The Eastern Portion buildings were generally utilized for automotive research and design until the 2010s. Additional operations included general office activities, warehousing, machine shop, and sign manufacturing. Outbuildings north of the current building were occupied by a boiler room, pump room, coal storage areas, carpentry shop, dust house and bulk storage. Bulk storage included sulfur dioxide, liquid storage (unknown type), battery and carbon dioxide tanks, and toluene process. The central and northern structures were generally demolished between 2009 and 2012. The current building and property have remained vacant since that time.

The Western Portion was developed during at least the early 1930s with an industrial building in the northern portion (12400 Strathmoor Street). Various additions were completed on the industrial building between 1936 and 1967 and between 1956 and 1957. The building was occupied by various truck manufacturing, machining, or warehousing operations between at least the 1930s and 1990s, including Watson-Rose Manufacturing Company, Ray Jacobs Machinery, and J. Lewis Company. The former northern building was demolished between 2002 and 2005. An additional warehouse building was constructed in the northern portion (12311 Mark Twain Street) in 1967, identified as a structural steel shop with addition completed in 1977.
