Additional Property Attributes

The New Boston Coke Corporation began operations in 1917 as a coke plant for a steel mill that saw the height of its production in the 1950s. In 1980 the steel mill ceased operations. New Boston Coke continued as an independent coke merchant. However, by 2002 the coke operations ceased, and the company declared bankruptcy. Throughout the use of the Property for industrial operations, original uses of on-site structures and facilities included a quench wastewater treatment plant, a transformer building, coke ovens, a quench pit, a light oil loadout and processing facility, a tar processing facility, a smoke stack and an area for coal storage and handling. Multiple rail lines traversed the northern and southern portions of the Property. Additionally, an elevated rail line with an associated earthen mound occupied the northern and northwestern portion of the Property. The facility has remained vacant since the coke plant ceased operations in 2002. There are concrete and brick structures remaining on the Property parcels (28.0287.000 and 34.0670.000) in the form of an old Coke Oven and Smokestack and the former concrete building foundations. The area is currently heavily overgrown with vegetation and brush.
