Additional Property Attributes

The site consists of seven contiguous tax parcels that together comprise approximately 128 acres. The site is a former lumber mill that started operating in 1917. By 1931, the lumber mill was converted to a box factory operated by Avondale Mills. By 1948 and until at least 1980, Avondale Mills used the property for cotton and equipment storage in warehouses. By 1987, most of the large buildings on site had been razed and several smaller buildings remained. The site is now mostly covered in trees with various remnants of mill operations. The operations included numerous potential sources of petroleum identified that could have contributed to soil or groundwater impacts during operations. Potential sources include: a fuel house, an oil house, a boiler house, and two engine rooms/houses. A machine shop and a car repair shop could be potential sources of either petroleum or solvents. A large (approximately 35-foot diameter) burner and a 16-foot diameter incinerator were operated. Although the nature of the operations suggests these structures may have been used only to burn wood waste, incinerator ash that involves the burning of trash sometimes results in elevated concentrations of metals. In addition, it is likely that fuel was piped from a central storage location to fire the burner and incinerator. A compartmented building that remains on the west side of the factory complex on the property was used as a kiln at one time and a settling basin later. The kiln was probably used to dry lumber prior to milling and would have likely been fired by fuel piped from a central fuel storage
