Additional Property Attributes

The site consists of approximately 50 acres located on McMath Mill Road in the west area of Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. The south area of the site consists of a large youth detention center complex with eight buildings including living quarters, offices, a gym, and classrooms. The north portion of the site consists of wooded land.

The site consisted of vacant land until the 1999 aerial image when the construction of the youth detention center is visible in the south half of the site. In the 2007 aerial image, the 8 buildings that make up the detention center are visible onsite along with the parking lot in the south area of the site. The site remains relatively unchanged through the present, consisting of the youth detention center in the south area of the site and wooded land in the north area of the site.

At the time of site reconnaissance, the site was observed to consist of a large, fenced in facility with 8 large buildings that include living quarters, classrooms, offices, and a gym. The facility includes several maintenance rooms with air heat and cooling equipment, an above ground storage tank that powers an emergency generator, and an underground storage tank (UST). Except for the UST (which could not be observed), all equipment appeared to be in good, working condition and no stains or odors were observed. The north portion of the site consists of wooded land.

No Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) were identified in connection with the site, except for the onsite UST. Due to the lack of information regarding this tank (including but not limited to installation date, material of construction, size, release detection/monitoring, age, etc.) this UST is deemed to be a REC. Terracon recommends additional investigation to evaluate the potential impact to the site from this REC. Specifically, Terracon recommends a limited site investigation (LSI) to sample subsurface media (soil, groundwater, etc.) for appropriate chemicals of concern (COCs). Suspect asbestos and LBP were observed within the onsite structure. Assessments for these non-scope items are recommended.
