Additional Property Attributes

The site was formerly used by the US military and the Iberia Parish Sheriff's office as a training base for the Navy until 1964. In 1970 the base was granted to Iberia Parish to be used as the Acadiana Regional Airport. The facility supported an area that was used by both the US military and the Iberia Parish Sheriff's office as a firing range. In 1984, a portion of the airfield was separated from the airport and provided to develop a research center. The firing range was part of this separation. The firing range has remained unused since the development of the research center.

ULL performed a limited Phase II ESA which indicated extensive lead contamination from previous use as a shooting range. They requested assistance from the LDEQ Brownfields Program to fully delineate the contamination and develop a cleanup plan in order to access the South Louisiana BCRLF for cleanup funding. Phase II delineation planning began in July 2022, and field work was approved to begin in February 2023. The Phase II ESA identified bullets within the mounded backstop of the firing range at four locations and metal concentrations were identified above state regulatory standards on the center portion of the front side of the mounded backstop. Additionally, lead was detected above state regulatory standards in surface soils at one location between the shooting line and mounded backstop. Cleanup planning is underway.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, the research center has been a primary research facility in the advancement of a vaccine for the virus. The support of the facility as being able to quickly turn around the data needed to help support vaccine development has brought due recognition to the facility as a leader within Louisiana and EPA Region 6. As a result, the facility would like to build on this success and expand the facility to provide additional research capabilities.
