Additional Property Attributes

The Drainage ditch is on the edge of a gob pile from the 1950's. The gob pile was capped and assessed by ODNR in the 1990's. The northern side of the itch went through the Abandoned Mine Lands Program and was remediated. The ditch leads to Captina Creek about .34 miles from the Ohio River.Due to the recreational nature of the creek and the surrounding areas, the Village would like to make sure the area is still clean before moving forward with potential engineering projects on the ditch. The water is frequently , visibly, orange/yellow. The results of the chemical analyses indicate that soils along the drainage ditch are only impacted with arsenic above the Ohio VAP Residential (unrestricted use) GNS. All other detected chemicals of concern were below their respective Ohio VAP Residential GNS and all detected chemicals of concern were below their respective Ohio VAP Commercial / Industrial GNS. Because the Site is not zoned for residential purposes, the Ohio VAP Commercial / Industrial GNS would represent the appropriate exposure scenario to recreational use of the ballfields and park adjacent to the southeast of the Site. The results of the chemical analyses indicate that the sediments in the drainage ditch are impacted with benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene, chrysene, fluoranthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene above their respective ecological PECs at sampling locations SS-4 and SS-5. Further, the arsenic concentrations in SS-2 and SS-3 and the benzo(a)pyrene concentration in SS-5 also exceed their respective Ohio VAP Residential GNS, but all
detected chemical concentrations meet Ohio VAP Commercial / Industrial GNS. Accordingly, because there are
impacts are above published sediment quality guidelines for ecological receptors, if in situ sediments are removed from the drainage ditch, they should not be spoiled in an aquatic setting. Rather, they could be spoiled in upland areas on a commercial / industrial property or could be dried on-Site and then disposed of off-Site at an accepting solid waste landfill. The results of the chemical analyses indicate that surface water within the ditch is not impacted with constituents of concern above Ohio VAP UPUS or Ohio River Basin Aquatic Life and Human Health Criteria.
