Additional Property Attributes

Pease Elementary, built in 1876 as the Austin Graded School, was the first building in Texas built entirely with public money. The Austin ISD board voted to close a select number of schools that were being underutilized or were no longer able to serve the community. Final classes at Pease were held in 2021. Following input from the community, redevelopment options will be evaluated by Austin ISD.
AISD has started the outreach and public engagement process. The first phase focuses on soliciting input on how the community thinks the property could best serve their needs and determining the highest and best use for the remainder of the property. The community has already identified affordable housing and early childhood education as top priorities.

Pease Elementary was designated a registered Texas Historic Landmark in 2013. As such, the state of Texas requires that the property serve an educational purpose, the existing building will be rehabilitated and renovated to continue educating young Austinites. Future redevelopment plans include transforming the historic school building into an affordable Early Childhood Education Center. Additionally, Austin ISD plans to construct a mix of affordable housing geared towards AISD teachers and staff, greenspace, and other amenities identified during the community engagement process. The ISD would like to include the environmental reports with the January 2023 Request for Proposals.

The Phase I ESA was received in December and did not identify any RECs at the site. The ACM and LBP Surveys and Lead Management Plan were completed in January. These reports will be included in the RFP for potential developers to consider as part of their redevelopment proposals.

In March 2023, the Board of Trustees voted to identify a partner to operate a quality affordable early childhood education center. The Request for Proposals was released in April 2023, and submissions will be evaluated over the next few months. Additional information about Austin ISD's community outreach and repurposing process is available at https://www.austinisd.org/repurposing/pease

United Way of Greater Austin was awarded the contract to provide Early Childhood Education at the Pease site. They are in the process of planning further development of the site, and if there will be any substantial changes to the existing building which would require abatement of building materials.
