Additional Property Attributes

The Sultana Historical Preservation Society (SHPS) requested assistance from the Arkansas Brownfield Program for the former Marion Gymnasium property, located at the northeast intersection of Briarwood Street and East Military Road, Marion, Crittenden County, Arkansas.

The property is currently developed with a brick school auditorium/gymnasium, built in 1933. The City of Marion has acquired the property and, following renovations, will lease the building to SHPS to operate the future Sultana Disaster Museum.

The Sultana Disaster occurred on April 27, 1865, days after the end of the Civil War. The Sultana was a steamboat carrying Union prisoners of war back to Northern territory. Although designed to carry just 376 passengers, on the night of the disaster the Sultana was crowded with close to 2,000 Union troops. The boat's captain had recently opted to patch a leaky boiler rather than perform more extensive repairs. After departing from Memphis, Tennessee on April 27, near Marion, Arkansas, the steamboat's boilers exploded, destroying the center of the boat and starting a fire. Of the 2,200 passengers, 1,195 died immediately or as a result of the disaster. The Sultana Disaster was the worst maritime disaster in US history, but it was overshadowed at the time by the end of the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln, which had occurred the day before.

The Arkansas Brownfield Program provided TBA funding for a Phase I ESA. No RECs were identified, but asbestos and lead-based paint were previously identified at the property. The Arkansas Brownfield Program also funded a cleanup consisting of asbestos abatement, lead-based paint abatement/encapsulation, and removal of miscellaneous hazardous materials and universal wastes).
