Additional Property Attributes

The subject property consists of four legal parcels of land, addressed as 600 East Barney Avenue, occupying approximately 3.67 acres. The School Building (constructed in 1951 with an addition in 1956) was initially identified as East Park School in the 1950s, Lindbergh School in the 1960s through the early 1980s, and Martin Luther King Jr. Public School/Elementary School in the early 1980s to 2014. In 2015, the School Building was shuttered by the Muskegon Heights School District. Since that time, the School Building has not been utilized for any specific purpose. A park consisting of playground areas, recreational sports fields/courts, horseshoe pits, and picnic areas has been present on the eastern portion of the subject property since the School Building was constructed. These park features, along with the Park Restroom Building (constructed in the mid-1980s), have been unutilized since the mid-2010s.

A Phase I ESA was conducted for the subject property on March 17, 2023. No RECs were identified during the course of the Phase I ESA. The potential developer, Apanou Capital Management, Inc., plans to construct six four-plex buildings (totaling 48 residential units on the subject property). At the time of the completion of the Phase I ESA, a final decision had not yet been made by Apanou Capital Management, Inc. as to whether the School Building would be razed or if the School Building would be renovated and repurposed for community-related activities.
