Additional Property Attributes

The subject property is a historic African American theater in the downtown business district of Bessemer. The Holland Project plans to redevelop the old theater into a performing arts center with a single cinema that will increase access to the arts. A Phase I was conducted at the site in March/April 2023. The parcel was identified as having one on-site REC associated with the past use of the parcel. The 0.17 acre parcel formerly contained a dry cleaner indicated on a 1924 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map. Four historical RECs were indicated for surrounding land use including two nearby former dry cleaners and two nearby former petroleum stations, the closest of which (a petroleum station) was approximately 165 feet away.
