Additional Property Attributes

This is a 7 parcel Site totaling 12 acres and is improved with two structures constructed in 1950 in poor condition. It was the location of a former leather tannery and manufacturing facility since 1820, originally owned by Mr. Adsit. The Site reportedly was a hazardous waste disposal site from the 1880s to 1968. The Hiteman family acquired the Site in 1910 and continued to operate it as a tannery until 1968, when the business was terminated. Following the closure of the facility, the Site was sold and leased as storage space until 1982. A portion of the Site was previously used as a trailer park. The Site is zoned vacant commercial and environmental easements restrict use to non-residential. A portion of the Site is currently being used as a public park with a walkway along the Unadilla River and wetland.

Initial research of the EPA National Priority List and the NYSDEC Remedial, Bulk Storage and Spills databases have indicated environmental concerns at this time. The NYSDEC added the Site to the Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites from 1988 to 1992. It was added to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) in 1999. Contaminants of concern are heavy metals including primarily chromium and lead. The EPA completed a 5-month long cleanup effort beginning in May of 2008, excavating contaminated soils, wetland sediments, and riverbank soil and sediment. The contaminated soils were replaced with clean fill and cleanup terminated in September 2008. The Site was de-listed from the NPL in 2012. The Site currently is subject to a Site update report every 5 years, an site management plan, and institutional controls.
