Additional Property Attributes

The building was constructed in 1865 as the Carson Brewing Company. The building then housed the Nevada Appeal (a twice-weekly newspaper) offices and a printing press. In 1974, Brewery Arts Center purchased the building from the Nevada Appeal. The building was then gifted to the City of Carson City for grant-related purposes. In 2019, the City of Carson City deeded the building back to the Brewery Arts Center. In 2022, Brewery Arts Center requested assistance from the Nevada Brownfields Program to perform a lead survey of three exterior masonry walls. These activities helped prepare the building for planned restoration work. Restoration work was achieved through a Nevada State Historic Preservation (SHPO) grant and mainly involved repointing all mortar joints on the north, west, and south exterior walls of the building. The SHPO grant also paid for removal of lead-paint identified through the lead survey conducted by the Nevada Brownfields Program. In addition to the lead-based paint survey, Brewery Arts Center also applied and was accepted for Nevada Brownfields Program assistance to characterize and dispose of the lead-containing waste generated during the restoration activities, which were not included in the scope of work or budget associated with the SHPO grant.
