Additional Property Attributes

The Town of Powhatan applied for a Rural Services Grant through the Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC) to fund renovations to their community center building. As a requirement of the grant, an asbestos inspection was performed and identified asbestos in floor tiles and mastic. The cost of removing the ACMs put the renovation project over budget, so the Town of Powhatan reached out to DEQ to request cleanup assistance in August 2023.

Upon review of the existing asbestos inspection, it was revealed that the inspection was not performed by an Arkansas-licensed asbestos inspector as required by state regulations. DEQ funded a new asbestos inspection by an Arkansas-licensed inspector which was completed in January 2024. DEQ then funded cleanup planning and asbestos abatement which was completed in May 2024. Approximately eleven 55-gallon steel drums and eight plastic bags of regulated ACMs were removed from the building and disposed of at an appropriate landfill.

The Town of Powhatan plans to apply for a new Rural Services Grant to complete renovations to the community center.
