Additional Property Attributes

This former gas station is located next door to The Round Barn - an Oklahoma Route 66 attraction. The Round Barn was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and all the while, this gas station has been right next door. Its last owner before the person who sold it to our program applicant was Ernest Lee "Butch the Barn Man" Berger, who moved into the station in 1947 when he was 5 years old, and worked next door at the round barn from the 1990s until his death in 2017. His aunt and uncle were the Joneses, who operated the facility as a DX gas station on Route 66 (we have pictures). Ruby Jones is actually listed as the last known operator for this facility in OCC records. Although the tanks were closed in place before OCC record-keeping became what it is today, our program applicant still wanted environmental assessments done, which include a tank removal, to investigate the land. Clint Spencer (our program applicant) has plans to use the property for mixed reuse of residential and commercial. He is mainly concerned with getting the environmental assessment done on the property as part of his reuse plan is residential. Contaminants found during the Phase II are being addressed by the OCC Petroleum Storage Tank Division corrective action process.
