Additional Property Attributes

The Site is an approximately 3,726 square foot (ft2) triangular shaped lot located in an urban area of Lawrence. The surrounding area consists of both residential and commercial properties. Site topography slopes gently to the south. The Site is currently used by the area residents as a gathering space. The central portion of the Site surface is covered with a combination of mulch and gravel and contains picnic tables for public use. Surrounding this area are various above-ground planters containing trees and plants. A public concrete sidewalk borders the Site perimeter. Several items associated with former Site operations remain on Site, including a light pole, a concrete footing that appears to have supported a signpost, and occasional metal debris on the surface.

According to information provided in prior environmental reports, the Site was developed by 1893 with a two-story residence. Site use remained residential until at least 1911. By 1949, the Site had transitioned into a gas filling station with at least two (2) confirmed on-Site underground storage tanks (USTs) in the northern portion of the Site. Six (6) other USTs were identified to be formerly located at the Site over the years, however no records of their installation dates were identified. The two-story residential building remained in place during the early years of the gas station's operation and was replaced with a smaller single-story storefront building by 1968. The Site was operated as a gas station by Cyr Oil Corporation (Cyr Oil) until it closed in 1993.

The City acquired the Site through tax foreclosure in 2006. The Site remained vacant and was used for parking by nearby residents until recently when the Site was improved as a public gathering space with above-ground features such as picnic tables and planters.
