Additional Property Attributes

The Site is located at the northwestern corner of North Pearl Street and West Main Street and is surrounded by the following: to the north, by a dental office, U.S. Post Office, and residences; to the east, by North Pearl Street and the DeKalb County Historical Museum; to the south, by U.S. Highway 6, a former church and a realty office (former gasoline station); and, to the west, by a martial arts studio (former gasoline station). The Site was developed prior to 1885 with a residence and office, a stable, and a blacksmith shop. By 1890, a wagon shop had been constructed near the blacksmith shop. By 1914, the residence and office had been demolished with construction of a veterinary office and auto repair garage on the western half of the Site. The auto repair garage operations included two 50-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) along East Main Street. By 1923, the veterinary office and auto repair garage were vacant, and a residence had been constructed where the blacksmith and wagon shops had once been. In 1932, an industrial warehouse operated in the former veterinary and auto repair buildings and a gasoline station had been constructed on the northeastern corner of the Site, and by 1946, a clothing factory was operating in the former veterinary and auto repair buildings. The gasoline station portion of the Site was vacant by the mid-1940s. The Site was operated by Engineered Materials, Inc. between 1960 and 2014 as a tool & die shop, a textile factory, and a warehouse. The Site has been vacant since the closure of Engineered Materials, Inc. in approximately 2014.
