Additional Property Attributes

The former Highland Lumber & Fuel Company site is a former lumber mill and bulk petroleum yard that closed in the 1970. Immediately adjacent to Keith Creek, the site is a key property the City needs to acquire in order to make much needed improvements to the Keith Creek watershed to reduce flooding. The site was once served by rail, where heating oil was delivered and transferred into a series of bulk aboveground storage tanks before being pumped into tanker trucks for residential delivery. As a result of exhausted brownfield grant funds, only a very limited Phase II could be completed which involved the advancement of 4 soil borings. One soil boring sample contained PNAs above State cleanup standards. Additional sampling is required to fully characterize the site. The City is moving forward with acquiring the property via donation after imposing its brownfields prevention ordinance. Upon acquiring the property, the City will move forward with demolishing a collapsed structure and perform land clearing to reduce blight and open up public access to Keith Creek.
