Additional Property Attributes

In 1954, Sutton residents refurbished an old dormitory building from Eklutna and added a basement and foundation to use for residents to meet or hold community activities. For over forty years, the building served as a community hall for residents in Sutton, Eska, and Jonesville. The building has not been used since the early 2000's due to building damage and suspected contamination. Asbestos is believed to be in the building and lead contamination may be found around the building from shooting contests. Nay'dini'aa Na Kayax (Chickaloon Native Village) submitted a DEC Brownfield Assessment & Cleanup (DBAC) application for a Phase I & II Assessment and Hazardous Building Material Survey. In the fall of 2023, a consultant conducted the assessments and HBMS and found the building to be contaminated with asbestos and mercury, the assessment also indicated the property has benzene, naphthalene, and naturally occurring arsenic in soil and fuel contaminants. The community wishes to turn the building back into a usable community hall although, this may not be feasible as the building is unsafe due to the foundation/basement walls caving in. DEC has been in contact with Chickaloon Native Village (a TRP) on the project but, at this time, they are not intending to seek further DBAC funding due to receiving EPA funds through 128(a).
