Additional Property Attributes

The Eklutna Tailrace Channel and levee were built in 1952, likely by the federal government
as part of the effort to utilize hydropower for electrification after World War II as part of the
Bureau of Reclamation's Eklutna Power Plant project. In the past, the Tailrace's manmade
channel banks have incurred a variety of cars and miscellaneous debris dumped by an
unknown source. Although, it has been speculated that the debris was placed to repair the
levee following the 1964 earthquake. A debris inventory conducted in 2020 by the Alaska
Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) documented 79 cars, 31 of which have already fallen
or are about to fall into the adjacent waterbodies and appear to be pre1970s. It appears that
all the cars have had their fluids and engines removed. In addition, 55 miscellaneous debris,
including refrigerators, ovens, tires, and steel drums were observed during the 2020
inventory. There is a concern that contamination including lead, heavy metals, and
hydrocarbons, associated with the debris may be located at the project site.

Currently, the Eklutna Tailrace is supported by hatchery coho and chinook salmon adults
and smolts that are reared at the ADF&G Fort Richardson Hatchery and released into the
Eklutna Tailrace annually. Salmon originating from the drainages of the Knik and
Matanuska Rivers are also harvested at the confluence of the Eklutna Tailrace and the Knik
River. The Tailrace provides fish habitat, recreational activities such as fishing, bird
watching, and is a popular photography spot due to the scenic nature of the area.
