Additional Property Attributes

Former Site operations at the Brownfields property have included a lumber mill from the early 1900s to the mid-1940s, fertilizer storage in the mid- 1920s, veneering operations in the late 1940s, a marina fueling station from the 1970s to the mid-2000s, a bulk petroleum storage and distribution facility from the 1950s to the 1990s (estimated), and a feed mill and fertilizer plant from the late 1940s to the mid-1990s. Additionally,
historical features from a 1911 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map include former structures affiliated with lumber mill operations of the J. L. Roper Lumber Company and The Interstate Cooperage Company. The cooperage business was likely involved with the construction of containers such as wooden barrels. Additional Sanborn Fire Insurance maps identified structures affiliated with fertilizer storage of the Pocomoke Guano Company (1924) and veneering operations of the Belhaven Veneer & Plywood Company (1947).

The Brownfields property is currently vacant, undeveloped land that includes gravel and dirt access drives, vegetated areas, wetlands areas, and a boat ramp. The western and northwestern portions of Parcel 1 are currently utilized for recreation-related activities, including the deployment of boats, fishing, and parking. Current redevelopment plans include upgrades to the existing boat ramp by the US FWS.
